Three topics are discussed in this article. First, music librarianship education is summarized according to the questionnaire survey conducted in 2008 to the IAML members. Second, the current state of music librarianship trainings in Japan is outlined. Finally, the future tasks to be solved on this issue are proposed.
The interdisciplinary approach has been promoted in music scholarly community. Various music sources in any genre are easily accessible on the web. However, the music library services in Japan are primarily based on Western Art music, which most of music colleges focus on their curriculum. The author thinks that music libraries need to be more enthusiastic for information services on music of all genres. It is also indispensable for music librarians to consider the knowledge and skills of digitizing (or at least digitally managing) cultural heritage information including traditional music areas. The author points out that building a database containing suitable metadata for music sources in all genres may be a key for the above issues.
