This paper considers the Expectancy-Value Model of Motivation in relation to poorly motivated false beginner Korean college students for the purposes of both showing the model is valid, as well as providing preliminary insights on these students for future research. This paper begins by considering this model with respect to the Korean educational system. In doing so, an overview of the teacher's role and the expectations inherent in it in the Korean context are discussed. Following this, a link between the fulfillment of these expectations and students' expectancy of learning is suggested. This paper next shows experimental evidence suggesting that poorly motivated false beginner Korean college students' lowered level of motivation can be reasonably explained by them having a lowered expectancy of learning. This paper further shows that within these students, there is a general covariance of expectancy and motivation for different classroom activities. This paper thus provides support for the validity of the Expectancy-Value Model of Motivation within the Korean context, as well as providing a framework for understanding some of the critical issues faced when teaching English to these students.
