Speed reading is one of the most important skills in order to adapt to the current informational age and also cope with many reading proficiency tests which now put much emphasis on speed reading. However, only a few of high school students seem to have been trained systematically in speed reading. Thus, this study was designed to introduce speed reading skills and also to find out how effectively multimedia programs such as Powerpoint may facilitate skill acquisition. The participants of this study were 124 high school students: 61 in the experimental group and 63 in the control group. The followings are the results: 1) the experimental group outperformed the control group in improving the reading speed, 2) multimedia-based text presentation had a positive effect on the experimental group in relation to the affective domain in developing the speed reading skills and general reading proficiency. Therefore, this study supplies evidence to support multimedia presentation usage as a useful tool for the development of speed reading skills.
