The aim of this study was to explore the understandings of the Nature of Science (NOS) for five science teachers while they participated in the biology lab activities using the strategy of Science Writing Heuristic (SWH). Participants’ lab reports, reflection essay, and transcript of interview were analyzed with the mixed-method research approach to examine the presentation of the NOS using the four themes of the NOS as a conceptual framework: (a) nature of scientific knowledge, (b) nature of scientific inquiry, (c) nature of scientific thinking, and (d) nature of the interaction among science, technology, and society. The findings of this analysis were as follows. First, the SHW was an effective strategy in order for science teachers to understand the NOS because they expressed the understandings about a variety of views of the NOS during the biology activities. Second, science teachers presented greatly their understandings about the nature of scientific inquiry (Theme II) and scientific thinking (Theme III) while they hardly presented the understandings about the nature of interaction among science, technology and society (STS; theme Ⅳ). Thus, it is concluded that the SWH could be an effective strategy for understandings of the nature of scientific inquiry and thinking in the biology lab activities.
