The purpose of this study is to examine the preliminary validity and reliability of the components of cognitive structure to a sports team. A convenience sampling method was utilized to select subjects. The selected sample was 191 undergraduate students enrolled at a large public university in the southeastern region of the United States. The data was analyzed using item-to-total correlation, item-to-item correlation, exploratory factor analysis, and Cronbach's α. The results of this study suggest that four dimensions(i.e., Affective Reaction, Cognitive Reaction, Direct Experience, and Knowledge) are suited for representing the components of cognitive structure to a sport team and explored to be valid and reliable to measure cognitive structure to a sports team. In addition, it is believed that the current study extends the general estimation of strong attitude to a more-detailed and specified estimation using the various cognitive elements applied to a sports team.
