The revision of the original scenario of a play typically reflects the reviser’s personal perspective on the literature, the purpose and rules of revision, and many other factors, such as the trends in the play scenario and social change. Among numerous other revisers, Feng Menglong, who had pointed out the side effects of the play’s plot, ignoring melody and exclusively pursuing uniqueness, revised the original play from his own perspective on literature. He emphasized the importance of melody, the structure of the plot, and the other factors of the play such as binbai, changci, and kefan. He assuredly expected that his revised works could be a good model for play writers and actors. Moreover, his ultimate goal was to enlighten and educate people through the art of the play. However, it was extremely difficult to accomplish enlightenment and amusement simultaneously through the play. Nevertheless, primarily because he pursued the very characteristics of the play, his revision has an important position in the history of Chinese theatre.
