Joseonbulgyoyushinron is the product of modern Korean religious culture. It is a major text that critically examines Manhae"s recognition of other religions. Manhae attempted to serve as a subjective religious figure by accepting Western modern civilization and establishing a new identity for Buddhism as a traditional religion in changing times.
Manhae felt a strong sense of crisis due to the existence of other religions, especially Christianity and Japanese Buddhism, which appeared as icons of modern civilization and showed great power that threatened the Buddhist world. He urged the Buddhist world to avoid falling into isolation or becoming confused, and to instead seek to conduct modern reforms of Buddhism.
Manhae pursued modern Western rationality, rationalism, and advanced technological civilization, but he employed Buddhist ideology such as dependent origination and the middle way. As such, Manhae"s ideas have a dynamic hybridity.
At the time of Korea"s entry into a society of religious pluralism after its opening, intellectuals from all walks of life responded to religions in various ways. That is, varying perspectives of religion as civilization-symbolic, deistic, people enlightening, and anti-religious were adopted.
Manhae actively embraced the modernity of Japanese Buddhism as a civilization-symbolic religion, while accepting the function of unifying as a religious concept of enlightening people. In ideological terms, however, Buddhism, which is both a modern and reasonable truth from the standpoint of deistic religious concepts with both philosophical principles and religious beliefs, was regarded as a superior religion.
Manhae maintained a multiple-level religious concept that actively embraced civilizationsymbolic religious concepts such as Christian organization, evangelism, modernized education and medical systems, and emphasized the excellence of Buddhism within the field of deistic religions.
As such, Manhae"s Joseonbulgyoyushinron presents religious discourse and reformation that seeks to harmoniously realize the religious concepts of deism, civilization-symbolism, and civilized peoples among modern “religious concepts.”
