The excavated costume discovered during national land development or moving of a burial site is an important empirical evidence for dress code research. Particularly, the relics of the grave owners that demonstrate clear time period are valuable as they indicate the clothing culture of a specific era. This research examined the types and characteristics of men’s clothing in the early 16th century through the excavated relics from Sasu-Kim’s grave in Jeonui-myeon, Sejong-shi, in 2016 and the results are as follows. First of all, 41 pieces of costumes were excavated from Sasu-Kim’s grave. The relics included ceremonial robe (團領, Dan-Ryung), straight robe (直領, Jik-Ryung), short-sleeved robe (褡護, Dab-Ho), inner robe (帖裏, Cheol-Lik), wrinkled robe (腋注音, Acjureum), tops, bottoms, ritual utensils for burial, and dental crowns. The types of ceremonial, straight, and short-sleeved robes were typical men’s robes in the 16th century, in which the front lengths were short and rear lengths were long. It was observed that the order of wearing a shroud consisted of putting on the ceremonial robe first, then straight robe followed by the short-sleeved robe with two inner robes. Such characteristics were also observed from shroud in another grave. There was also a custom to put clothes of families or relatives in a coffin. We were able to confirm such tradition from Sasu-Kim’s grave through the findings of Jeogori, a Korean traditional female jacket, and skirts that were excavated as shrouding clothes in the coffin. Lastly, Kwiigae (earpick) and Pyojubak (small gourd) were excavated. Kwiigae has been historically excavated only from the historic site of Chunglip-Lee’s grave. Therefore, it is expected to be a valuable reference for further researches. There has been 7 Pyojubaks historically excavated and the identified period is from the 16th toearly 17th centuries.
