This study focuses on humor in several of Kim Seung-ok’s novels to see how the writer uses humor to reveal the special emotional state of the characters. The attitude of the characters to humor can be inferred from an analytical understanding of the dialogue and plot patterns. The highlighting of the characters’ special emotional state in the novels is understood as an indicator of breakage in their relationship and presented through a narrative conversation between the characters in awkwardly processed situations. The conversation is humorous in contrast with the situation the characters are faced with. In this paper I consider three aspects of this peculiar humor. First, the characteristics of humor as a defense mechanism for fear of intimacy found in the absence of communication between the characters in “Winter 1964 in Seoul.” Second, the characteristics of cynical and allegorical humor, and the humor of aggression shown by intellectuals in “Hwansangsuchup.” Third, in “A cup of tea” and “1960s style,” I examine Kim seung-ok’s satire of the sixties’ vulgar consumption culture which is portrayed as a physical symptom, while also looking at the lives of the petit bourgeoisie who cannot participate. Kim Seung-ok’s humor is understood as a form of pathos, characteristically formed in the culture of the time, and functioning as a sanction that can give a glimpse of 1960s Korean society.
