This paper reviewed “Gushu-shiyong (10 poems about Gushu 姑熟)”, one of Li Bai’s “Huaigu shi (poems of recalling antiquity).” These poems are not Serial Poems, but for the edits later, these poems are grouped together, and as they share atmosphere and sentiment in some point, can be regarded as Serial Poems in a broad sense. The first piece, “Gushu Xi(姑熟溪)”, is perfect to be the beginning of the compilation. It makes you very curious about the next part, as if you just opened the first part of a scroll painting. From the second piece to the last piece, there are great scenery of the place and, an appreciation, how Li Bai felt about the scenery. The last piece “Tianmen Shan (天門山)” ends with a description of a landscape of mountain sinking into the green glow of the setting sun, and this also gives you the lingering imagery like you just looked at the last part of the scroll painting. On the whole, among 10 pieces, “Xie Gong Zhai (謝公宅)”, “Ling Xiao Tai (凌歊臺)”, “Huan Gong Jing (桓公井)”, “Ling Xu Shan (靈墟山)”, these four pieces are more like “Huaigu shi” than other poems, as each piece is related to a particular person of the past. Other poems are more like “Shan Shui shi (landscape poem)” or “Yongwu shi” (description poem) than “Huaigu shi (poems of recalling antiquity)” However, as mentioned above, in most of the descriptions of sceneries in these 10 pieces of poems, there are delicate and tender eyes and a sad feeling at the same time. I regard they are grouped together like Serial poems as they have this common point, and for the delicate and tender eyes and a sad feeling, I regard these were the feelings Li Bai often felt late in life.
