The night buses are operating after twelve o"clock at midnight on 80 routes with the schedule of 260 times in a day in Gyeonggi-Do. The buses are very useful for passengers who do not have any other choices in public transit service at midnight.
The purpose of this study is to improve the service of night buses operating during midnight. Night bus passengers want more to operate on various routes and many areas in Gyeonggi-Do, although the overall profitability of the buses has continuously dropped.
There are a couple of problems in the operating system of the night buses in the aspect of bus ridership, fare system, earnings so on. The number of night bus passengers has been decreased every year. Therefore, the night bus companies do not like operate their buses at night by the year"s operating deficit.
The result of this study shows that the new route system of night buses should be newly organized based on the bus ridership at midnight. The fare rate of night buses should be higher than the fare of buses operating in the daytime.
This study suggests that the service of night buses are essential for bus passengers at midnight, and the buses should be continuously operated until late night in the more areas in Gyeonggi-Do. Therefore, the subsidy on the buses should be sufficiently supplied to the bus companies operating night buses.
