The Gyohaksha Korean history textbook is a good example for evaluating a newly..announced government..designated textbook. This paper analyses the characteristics of the so..called "Daehanminguk..Shagwan"(historical viewpoint of the Republic of Korea) expressed in that textbook:
1. "Daehanminguk-Shagwan" is based on the premise that history should function as a great monument. Thus, it mythicizes Korean national history, hybridizing ethnic and national pride.
2. It changes traditional nationalism into state power-oriented nationalism, i.e., ultra-nationalism akin to fascism.
3. It is based on a modernization-ideology which is an expression of Eurocentrism and ultimately American centrism. In the same context, it justifies imperialism, associating this with the "civilization"-slogan.
4. It is founded upon the historical theology of the Cold War which regards the historical processes since 1917 as an endless struggle between good and evil, i.e., between "liberal democracy" represented by the USA and "communism"("totalitarianism") represented by the Soviet Union.
These extreme right inclinations result from the condensation of week points inherent in South-Korean history education being confined within the so-called national history paradigm. This paper suggests that now is the best time for serious discussion about emancipating Korean history textbooks from the national history paradigm.
