This study explored the recent delinquency participation status and factors influencing delinquency participation among multi-cultural youth, using MAPS. The results are as follows.
First of all, the delinquency status of multi-cultural teenagers from 2013 to 2015 showed a high frequency of truancy, drinking and watching adult sites. The additional analysis of differences between delinquency participation groups and those not, showed that delinquency participation groups had significantly lower parent support, parent supervision, teacher relations, and class participation than those that did not, On the other hand, adolescents in the group were significantly higher in terms of depression, academic achievement dissatisfaction, multicultural joke stress, smoking friends, and drinking friends, including previous delinquency experiences compared to those who did not.
Analysis of the factors influencing delinquency participation of multi-cultural teenagers showed that boys were more likely to participate in the delinquency. In addition, the previous delinquency experience had most powerful effect on recent delinquency. The more sincere they were in school, the less likely they were to join the delinquency.
Previous studies on multi-cultural teenagers were difficult to generalize the results of the study, as a multi-cultural youth study was conducted in limited areas due to the lack of access at a nationwide level. This study is meaningful in looking at recent trends in delinquency participation of multi-cultural youth in Korea and in the variables affecting their chances of participating in delinquency using nationwide data. This study implies that basic data were provided for the establishment of education policies considering the environmental and psychological characteristics of multi-cultural adolescents.
