The purpose of this study was to examine the social support exchanges between elderly people and their adult children while making a distinction between rural and urban areas. It examines life changes over a 6-year period by comparing data obtained 2011-2017. The applied statistical methods were statistical analysis, t-test, Chi-square analysis, hierarchical regression analysis, and logistic regression analysis using the spss 23.0 program. The results of the study are as follow. The effects of social support exchanges with children on quality of life were examined. In this study, quality of life was classified into two dimensions life satisfaction and suicidal ideation. In the case of the variables related to life satisfaction, the influences of frequency of children’s contact and visitation, caring from children, providing emotional support for children increased the life satisfaction of the rural elderly 2011-2017. Meanwhile, the influences of frequency of children’s contact and visitation, caring from children and providing emotional support to children increased the life satisfaction of urban elderly people during the same period. In the case of the variables related to suicidal ideation, from 2011-2017, the influences of instrumental support and the provision of support for children with suicidal ideation in rural elderly disappeared, while number of children, frequency of contact with children, irregular cash from children and irregular cash for children all had significant influence on suicidal ideation among the rural elderly. An examination of the urban elderly showed that the influence of support for children irregular cash and in kind disappeared, while household income, frequency of contact with children and providing emotional support for children all had significant influence on suicidal ideation. Based on the results of this study, methods to improve the quality of life of elderly people living alone are discussed.
