This paper explores how a borrowed word, ‘리스펙’ is perceived to Koreans. The main tools are a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. ‘리스펙’ has two Korean counterpart words, ‘존경’ and ‘존중.’ The three words have similarities and differences in their semantic meaning and pragmatic scope of usage. ‘리스펙’ is mainly used to replace ‘존경’ rather than ‘존중,’ and it is considered more implicative, exclamatory and applicable than the other two in certain situations. Adaptation of its semantic or pragmatic functional range is confirmed in the process of borrowing. A few definitions of English ‘respect’ is hired, when ‘리스펙’ is used in Korean. The context to use ‘리스펙’ is decided by a few factors, such as age or seriousness of the situation. Motivation to use it is to express youthful, playful, or trendy attitude. The paper may contribute to increasing awareness of pragmatic function of borrowed words and expressions.
