This study speculates the (im)possible work of mourning for Yugoslavia in Emir Kustrica’s auteur film Underground (1995), produced during the Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s. This paper is a multidisciplinary convergence study that examines the interface among film research (cinema of poetry), spatial discourse (balcanism) and psychoanalysis (the work of mourning). Underground is kind of the work of cinematic mourning for the lost country(Yugoslavia). The narrative method of Underground uses mise en abyme like a mosaic of fragmented consciousness to represent a emotional community in the (im)possible space through ‘cine-trance’. This study conducts three discussions like the followings. First, the cinema of poetry and free indirect discourse theory are discussed for ‘cine-subjectivity’ and ‘cine-trance’, where alternative historical films (or historiography) are possible in art film. Second, we discuss how to perform cinematic cartography of wars in Yugoslavia, and in particular, how to edit archive footage and representational footage. Third, it attempts to reveal historical implications and cultural, ethnic and national identities contained in the analysis of the (im)possible work of mourning. In conclusion, Kustrica embodies a (self)deceptive cinematic cartography for Yugoslavia in Underground. In order to describe the history of Yugoslavia in the Balcans, it borrows Western European"s geopolitical point of view (balcanism), which regards Eastern Europe as a primitive state, to form a space where war lasts forever.
