This article aims to comprehensively examine the publishing history of the Hulbert series, the background from which it emerged, and its composition and characteristics in terms of the acceptance and dissemination of modern knowledge. According to C.N.Weems (1962), in his Hulbert’s History of Korea, the series refers to a series of textbooks he planned with his colleagues while serving as a teacher at a state middle school (now known as Imperial Middle School). However, little attention has been paid to the publication history, content, features, and significance of this series.
Hulbert came to Korea as a YUKYOUNG GONGWEON(national school) teacher in 1886, and he wrote the first Korean language geography textbook, the SaMin-Pilji. He taught in a teaching school in 1897, was a government middle school teacher until 1905, and attended the Hague Peace Conference in 1907. He has left achievements in every field of Korean modern history.
The Hulbert series is not known in its entirety. Following a letter he wrote, it is estimated that at least 12 textbook series were planned, but to date only five books have been confirmed as part of the series: Chohakjiji (초학디지), Samin Min-Pilji (사민필지), History of America (미국사긔), Saengrihak Chogweon (생리학초권), and Cheonmunryakhae (텬문략해). It is possible Dongmulhak (동물학), Sikmulhak (식물학) and Daehanryeoksa (대한력사) are also part of the series but it is unclear as to whether the copyright is preserved, so it is not possible to confirm.
Despite these limitations, this study of the Hulbert series aims to highlight "normal education through modern knowledge dissemination", in order to standardize academic terms as well as sentences in pure Korean textbooks. The study shows that the Hulbert series is a series of modern textbooks in terms of the words and learning methods contained.
