The ‘local Extinction’ perspective that emerged in 2016 is based on the existing indicators of underdevelopment, low fertility, and aging population. However, it has given rise to a big wave as it is directly related to local sustainability, that is, survival. This study analyzed the relationship with small schools in terms of local extinction. We identified possible school closings in 297 Eup-myeon-dong elementary schools in Jeonnam. We looked at changes in the number of schools in the anticipated extinction area. As a result of predicting the possibility of closing, 147 of 429 elementary schools in Jeonnam were included. 34.3% of small schools were likely to be closed. This result is very shocking. Changes in approaches to various policy inputs to address existing regional education issues are needed.
