Report Errors
The debate over the question of how a proper name has a semantic referent is still ongoing. Although Evans’s dominant source theory is well-known to those who participate in the debate, some of its important elements and motivations have not been clearly appraised. I illuminate these aspects, which Evans argues are the aspects of a proper theory of reference that Kripke’s simple picture of causal/communicational chain fails to elucidate. Then I defend Evans’s theory from Dickie’s attack based on a counterexample. Dickie’s objection centers around the notion of a causal source, which is an integral part of Evans’s account of how the referent of a name is determined. I argue that Dickie misinterpreted Evans’s definition of a causal source and that his account of deferential intention also solves the problem raised by Dickie. In addition, I briefly explain how the aspects of Evans’s dominant source theory developed in his later theory of reference.
