The purpose of this study is to examine how to translate mimetic words used in the two literary works Tongue and Whale into Chinese. According to the analysis result, in the Korean-Chinese translation versions of these two works about 50% of the mimetic words used in the original texts were translated. Korean mimetic words, which are all adverbs, were translated in various forms; for example, such words were translated into adjectives in the forms of ‘non-overlapping adjective,’ ‘-然[ran] type adjective,’ and ‘overlapping adjectives (AA, AABB, ABB, and so forth).’ Adverbs were also used to translate such words in the forms of ‘adverb’ and ‘-然[ran] type adverb.’ When verbs were used, such words were translated in the forms of ‘adverb,’ ‘緊[jǐn] +verb/verb+緊[jǐn],’ and ‘verb+resultative complement compound.’ In addition, mimetic words were also translated in the forms of ‘four-character idiom,’ ‘quantifier structure,’ ‘大[da] +noun,’ and so forth.
