An essential condition that a machine operating in real space, such as a service robot or a self-driving car, has to satisfy in order to successfully perform its tasks is the competence of perceiving the state of its environment. This paper investigates the conditions that must be fulfilled by the perception of such machines, specifically of those that are intended to surrogate humans. It thereby presents an analysis that embodies the thoughts about the direction that technology shall pursue, while elaborating the discussion about how to encourage the relevant technologies to move in that direction. Given the values of highest priority claimed in the first principles of engineering ethics, the artifacts that surrogate human agents must be made in the safest manner as far as we know. For this purpose, the machine vision should be developed so that it resembles the vision of human being whom it will surrogate. Human perception has interesting features endowed by the history of evolution. Among others, this paper focuses on its mode of perceiving the objects by applying conceptual categories, aspects of perceptual constancy, and the enactive characters of human perception. In every area of application considered in this paper, self-driving cars included, all these elements show distinct relevance. A normative guideline shall be deduced from this, that we must check in making such intelligent artifacts that those features of human perception be instantiated, or replaced without substantial loss in perceptual competence.
