My purpose of this paper is to analyze the episode of the calming of the sea that Jesus performed in the Gospel of Mark 4:35-41 in the context of Roman masculinity. Employing an imperial-critical method, I disclose that Jesus illustrated in the narrative imitates Roman masculinity, and his masculinity also reveals its resistance to an imperial ideology of the Roman masculinity in a hidden way. From the perspective of the Roman Empire, masculinity is not biologically innate, but socially constructed and maintained. And, the core of the Roman masculinity is to master or control himself and others with his penetrative, aggressive, and dominant power and practice. In terms of the Roman masculinity, the scene in which Jesus, who is extraordinarily calm in an unsettled situation and stilling a tempestuous sea, demonstrates that Jesus is an ideal ‘man’ in that he perfectly controls both himself and others, which is the stormy sea. Moreover, Jesus’ imitation of Roman masculinity implies the possibility of political resistance in it. In the imperial ideology of masculinity, masculinity is a socio-political power that feminizes the powerless, the inferior, and the subordinated. But Jesus, who is supposed to be feminized as a colonized subject, is not feminized, rather displays his perfect masculinity. Thus, his ideal masculinity resists to the feminizing power of the empire. Moreover, Jesus invades and dominates the sea that belongs to Rome/emperor’s territory in the Roman imperial propaganda. In doing so, the text implies that Jesus’ masculinity is superior to that of the emperor.
