This paper investigates a theoretical discussion of participation of religion in a civil society. Jürgen Habermas asserts that religious beliefs should be translated into secular language in order to exert influence on civil society. In contrast, Charles M. Taylor argues that citizens in modern democratic societies are entitled to participate in the public sphere in the language most meaningful to themselves, and thus need not translate religious discourse into universal and civil languages. Meanwhile, David Martin emphasizes that although translation of religious language into secular language is inevitable, religion’s essential virtues are not weakened by the process of translation, and religious participation can be deemed successful when religion meets the needs of civil society. Martin’s theoretical discussion, which focuses on the impact of religious participation in the public sphere, provides insight into the situation in Korea, where criticism of conservative Protestants’ participation in civil society is mounting.
