The purpose of this paper is to examine in detail the degree of ‘sameness’ and ‘difference’ of how Liaozhaizhiyi(聊齋志異), which was created in a ‘literary language’ in the early Qing Dynasty, was revised and published in Xingmengpianyan(醒夢駢言) that was completed in a ‘colloquial languag’ in middle and late Qing Dynasty. Unlike numerous works imitated or revised in the same style, i.e. the ’literary language’, this comparison allows the study of not only the overall art tendency and literature trends of the society at that time but also changes in literary thoughts according to the times at various levels. In addition, this study provides major clues to the recognition and understanding of literature, including content changes in novel works, by closely relating to the writer, readers, society, as well as diverse fields such as politics, culture, and art. During the recreation process of Xingmengpianyan(醒夢駢言) for Liaozhaizhiyi(聊齋志異), changes are clearly seen in the content, form, narrative system, composition, expression techniques, and thematic consciousness of the work. What is clearly revealed from the overall aspect rather than the individual aspect of the work is definitely the ‘difference of theme.’ This can be summarized into several contents in the recreation of Liaozhaizhiyi(聊齋志異) into Xingmengpianyan(醒夢駢言), among which the most apparent characteristic is ‘Strengthening the Notion of Good and Evil.’ The ‘Notion of Good and Evil’ plays an important role in effectively showing the theme of the work because it is closely connected with the elements of politics and ideology, culture and economy, and literature and art of the time. Moreover, the ‘Notion of Good and Evil’ offers an understanding of the relationship among the writer, work, and readers by closely connecting them with the times, society, and culture while comprehensively examining the aspects and meanings of the thematic change of work. Thus, this study will be an important opportunity to examine the tendency and flow of art and literature of the society at the time, as well as the model and patterns of changes according to the times with both breadth and certainty.
