The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between mother’s autonomy support and children’s social competence and effortful control and empathy and to verify hypothesis that autonomy support by a mother has an effect on their children’s social competence and that effortful control and empathy has mediating effects on the relationship between the mother’s autonomy support and her children’s social competence. The results of this study demonstrated that there is only a positive correlation between perceived autonomy support by a mother and her children’s social competence and effortful control and empathy. Second, the mediating effect was significant in the relationship between the mother's autonomy support and her children’s social competence. Regarding the simple mediating effect, empathy completely mediated the relationship between mothers' autonomy support and their children’s social competence. With regard to dual mediation effects, effortful control and empathy had sequential dual mediation effects on the relationship between mothers' autonomy support and their children’s social competence. This study is meaningful in that it demonstrated that a parenting style that supports children’s autonomy also has an important effect on the development of children’s social competence. It was also possible to identify the psychological path through which the mother’s autonomy support, an environmental factor affecting the development of children’s social competence, affects children.

본 연구는 모의 자율성 지지와 아동의 사회적 유능성, 의도적 통제 및 공감능력의 관계를 밝히고, 자율성 지지가 사회적 유능성에 영향을 미치는 경로에서 의도적 통제와 공감능력의 매개효과를 확인하고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위해 초등학교 5, 6학년 아동 240명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였고, 부모의 자율성 지지 척도(P-PASS), 청소년용 사회적 능력 질문지, 청소년용 기질 척도 개정판(EATQ-R), 아동용 공감지수 척도(EQ-C)를 척도로 사용하였다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS 22.0을 이용해 기술통계, 상관분석을 실시하였고, AMOS 22.0을 이용하여 구조방정식 모형을 분석하고, 매개효과를 확인하였다. 본 연구의 연구문제에 따른 주요 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 아동이 지각한 모의 자율성 지지와 아동의 의도적 통제, 공감능력 및 사회적 유능성 간에 정적인 관계가 있음이 확인되었다. 둘째, 변인들간 경로에서 두 가지 매개효과가 확인되었다. 우선 모의 자율성 지지와 아동의 사회적 유능성 간의 관계를 공감능력이 완전매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 자율성 지지와 사회적 유능성 간의 관계를 의도적 통제와 공감능력이 순차적으로 완전매개하는 것으로 확인되었다. 본 연구는 어머니가 아동의 자율성을 지지하는 양육방식이 아동의 사회성 발달에도 중요한 영향을 미친다는 점을 확인하였다는 점에서 의의를 찾을 수 있다. 또한 사회적 유능성 발달에 영향을 미치는 환경적 요인인 모의 자율성 지지가 아동에게 영향을 미치는 심리적 경로를 확인할 수 있었다. 특히 이 경로에서 아동의 의도적 통제와 공감능력이 중요한 요인임을 확인할 수 있었고, 이는 추후 아동의 지도와 상담에서 참고자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이라 기대한다.
