The main purpose of this paper is to explore the political view of Abdurrahman Wahid, the 4th President of Indonesia. Abdurrahman Waid alias Gus Dur is one of Indonesian Islam Ulama that participate in politics. He is titled with ‘Guru Bangsa’, the teacher of the nation. He exerted on Islam education, leading Islam organizations. Until 2001, he undertook the presidency until 2001 after he was selected by MPR(Majelis Permusyawaratan Rakyat) in 1999. He was recognized as a centrist to most groups and expected to achieve democratization. Accordingly, this paper aims at analyzing the political philosophy, its formation background, and main ideas of Former President Gus Dur, a distinguished Islam scholar who marked a milestone on Indonesian religion and politics. One of his philosophical formation backgrounds is family relationship. His grandfather, Hasyim Asyari is one of founding fathers of NU(Nahdlatul Ulama). In addtion, his father, Wahid Hasyim was the Minister of Religion. Influenced by these brilliant father and grandfather, he participated in politics, carrying out the Islam education and leading the NU of the Islam organization. He went into politics through the NU, representing interests of the community. Obviously, the growing expectation of the era for democratization in aspiration must be embedded in building his national identity, democracy, and 68 동남아연구 30권 1호leadership. The main ideas of Gus Dur are summarized with the world view of Pesantren of the traditional institute of Islam education, indigenization of Islam, Pancasila of national ideology recognizing diversity, political culture of middle path, national identity, pro-democracy, pan-humanitarianism combined with the teachings of Islam about tolerance and social harmony, religious problems of leadership, and requirements of leadership. After his death on December 20, 2009, the Islam organization NU and other numerous communities have inherited his ideas and the writings he left have been reevaluated positively.
