Even though George Eliot’s novella “The Lifted Veil” is not one of her major works, it significantly reveals her belief in ethics especially when reading it in the light of Levinas’ thoughts. Despite the difference of the era, the nineteenth century author and the twentieth century philosopher have similar ideas on ethics. Both find the ethics in the rupture of the self. “The Lifted Veil” contains crucial elements that evoke reader’s failed understanding of the text, which are the main character with clairvoyance, gothic mood, and an uncanny experiment that promptly resurrects a dead person. This moment of reader’s failure in understanding causes the complete openness of subjectivity of the reader. Levinas understands this rupture caused by language as ‘saying’, as ‘saying’ is the ultimate exteriority of language. At the same time, ‘saying’ also gives the meaning to the ‘said’, the representable language. The reader can reach the exteriority of the self through reading “The Lifted Veil”, and this process can be the work of an ethical reading. Through this ethical reading, the subject glimpses the moment of ethics which possibly leads the self to another encounter with other.
