This article analysed how a specific Japanese expression corresponds to a Korean counterpart. Particularly, it aims to clarify the characteristics of the expression ‘teiuka.’ Even though ‘teiuka’ tends to be habitually translated into Korean in a single form, this paper seeks to present alternatives.
‘Teiuka’ has been usually thought to correspond to ‘ralka’ in Korean. This analysis, however, demonstrates that it can be translated into a variety of expressions, including ‘gunde, ragiboda, ani and ani gunde’ as well as ‘ralka’.
Building on the functions and usage of ‘teiuka’ discussed in previous studies, this paper also found that different translations represent different meanings: ‘ralka’ indicates ‘correction, addition, a different way of saying, and repetition;’ ‘ani’ suggests ‘correction, addition, a different way of saying, negation, and appeal;’ ‘gunde’ refers to ‘a switch in topic;’ ‘ragiboda’ means ‘correction, a different way of saying;’ and ‘ani gunde’ states ‘a different way of saying, negation, and topic switch.’ Finally, it is found that the meaning of ‘teiuka’ differs with its position in a sentence.
