This article focuses on the birth and development of the oil industry of tsarist Russia in comparison with the oil industry in the United States. Through the analysis of various data, we came to the following conclusions. First of all, although the Russians already knew about petroleum from the 16th century, it was only after the Absheron Peninsula was acquired in 1813 that the oil industry began to develop in Russia. Second, in Russia in the mid-19th century, unlike in the United States, the modernization of the oil industry had not yet begun in earnest. The main reasons for this backwardness were ‘the monopoly system(откупная система)" and the feudal social structure. Third, after the reforms since 1861 and the enactment of legislation in 1872, the oil industry in Russia had a modern production system. And based on this, at the end of the 19th century, Russia overtook the US in crude oil production. Fourth, The Petroleum Production Company Nobel Brothers(for short, Branobel), founded by the Nobel brothers from a Swedish migrant family, had become a leading company in the Russian oil industry through the adoption of new technologies, innovation of production methods, and bold capital investment. Fifth, at the beginning of the 20th century, Russia fell far behind the United States in oil production due to domestic political turmoil and the late introduction of new drilling technologies. And in 1918, after the October Revolution, all oil companies in Russia were nationalized.
