This paper analyzes interactional functions and meaning of Korean sentence-ender -ketun in various contexts from macro and micro level perspectives with the lens of a cognitive conceptual approach. The study also provides the frequency of occurrence of -ketun in utterance final position according to its semantic meaning based on different genres. Throughout the discourse data, -ketun(yo) was found in two parts:1) in the sense of PAY ATTENTION as its core function, and 2) with the function of “persuading” the interlocutor typically depending on a specific discourse genre. First, the speaker appends a -ketun particle to his utterance to signal the interlocutor to “pay attention” to what she or he is saying or to pay attention to the immediately following utterance. Secondly, its PERSUASION function represents the speaker’s attempt to advertise merchandize to the viewer, to touch the audience’s emotion, and to influence the audience’s thought. In determining these meanings and functions of -ketun, the concept of FOCUS (Strauss, 2002) was applied.
