This paper aims to reconstruct Chun Tae-il, a symbol of “labor martyr(노동열사)” in Korean society, in the experience of internal migrant-family. The migration process not only changes an individual’s view of the world, but also changes the locality within a social network. Chun Tae-il had lived in Daegu, Busan, and Seoul with his family in the 1950s, and in the early 1960s experienced runaway from family due to livelihood problems. His runaway was in the same pattern as the accumulation of experiences of teenage single-seasonal migration. In 1964, the Chun Tae-il family left their hometown and relocated to Seoul when the kinship network failed to serve as a social safety net. In this migration process, the family broke up, and they faced competition for survival as an individual in Seoul. After this period, when Chun Tae-il got a job in the Peace Market(평화시장), the Chun Tae-il family became stable and settled in Seoul. Chun Tae-il’s employment provided a stable salary to his family, but the Dongdaemun Peace Market area was a space that exposed the youth class gap as a rapidly increasing migrant. Chun Tae-il linked his past with the miserable situation of unskilled female workers in 1969, and recognized the cause of tragedy as ‘infinite competition for survival’. He focused on the “Labor Standards Act”(근로기준법) as a means to escape the competition for survival, and tried to seek an alternative to escape the competition for survival, which was common sense at that time.
