This paper aims to capture the nature of tough-constructions in English. To deal with the nature of tough-constructions, two main approaches, a movement-based approach on the one and a base-generation approach on the other, are put forth in the literature. Centering around the issue of the asymmetry of PP intervention effects in tough-constructions, we will propose an alternative syntactic approach based on the argument structure of tough-predicates and CP-predication. The proposed approach has shown that the intervention effects of PP in touch-constructions result from the different argument structure of tough-predicates, rather than from the nature of PP argument in tough-constructions. Finally, we will show that our approach can explain the nature of tough-constructions properly and resolve the problem with the previous approaches with regard to PP intervention effects in tough-constructions.
