Based on national students physical health database, we selected 6531 students from some universities in China and divided them into different grade levels according to test results. SOM (Self-organizing Map) was used to visually cluster and qualitatively analyze the physical health parameters of male and female students in each score interval. The key influencing factors and relevant explaining variables of physical fitness were conducted in each region based on principle component analysis (PCA). The results showed that body weight and BMI were the most influencing factors on physical fitness for both male and female, as well as the common explanatory variables for physical fitness. Weight, standing long jump and 50-meter run were the main influencing factors for male students’ physical fitness, as well as the main explanatory factors for the score of physical test. Obvious variations were observed on the influencing factors and explanatory variables in each score levels for female. Weight was both the main influencing factor and explanatory variable for female physical fitness. The clustering results by PCA indicated the clustering characteristics with BMI and body weight were relatively stable, whereas other variables showed different clustering characteristics in different score levels. Our findings provide valuable information and guidance for regional physical activities without ignoring the overall physical quality improvement.
