The first book of Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam Trilogy, Oryx and Crake, is a text that rethinks human beings who have come to the dystopian era, where cultural discourses intersect. This work is also the result of experimental thinking on how mankind facing human extinction should reconstruct itself. This paper examines Atwood’s Oryx and Crake through Martha C. Nussbaum’s philosophy of emotion. Nussbaum closely analyzed human emotions based on evolutionary biology and cognitive psychology through Hiding from Humanity, which discussed the relationship between the legal system and human emotions. In this work, Nussbasum pays particular attention to disgust and shame, because they are emotions that undermine human values and destroy humanity. Reading Atwood’s Oryx and Crake through discussions of disgust and shame is expected to provide an opportunity to expand critical discussions on the world-dominating biopower, biotechnology, and the collusion of technology and capital. In addition, analyzing Oryx and Crake focusing on disgust and shame will be the first step to find concrete alternatives in the practical dimension of practicing compassion and imagination through MaddAddam Trilogy.
