This study develops and validates a questionnaire for the type of coach control essential for secondary school student-athletes (aged 14–18 years) in an interscholastic. A total of 1,175 coaches, athletes, and their parents were selected as the study participants through a convenience sampling method. The experimental procedures of this study were divided into four stages. In the first stage, 72 question items were obtained for the construction of the type of coach control through a review of previous studies and a semi-structured open-ended questionnaire that was administered to 30 coaches, athletes, and parents. In the second stage, 63 questions were selected by experts who checked content validity of the 72 questions. These 63 questions were administered to a group of 100 student-athletes in an interscholastic at secondary school through a preliminary study, which resulted in 48 questions. In the third stage, these 48 questions were administered to a total of 500 secondary school student-athletes in an interscholastic, and the data were subjected to exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, which resulted in the final set of 17 questions. Finally, measurement invariance was tested using gender and exercise type, and there was no difference between groups, establishing the measurement invariance of the questionnaire. Thus, the coach type for athlete control that was finally derived comprised four sub-factors: providing feedback, psychological pressure, coercive improvement, and involvement in privacy.
