감정표현불능증을 측정하는 Toronto 20항목 감정표현불능증 척도(TAS-20)는 원 저자들에 의해 정서인식의 어려움, 정서 표현의 어려움, 외부 지향적 사고라는 세 가지 요인을 측정하기 위해 제작되었고 총점 사용이 권유되어 왔다. 그러나 최근 많은 연구에서 정서 인식의 어려움과 정서 표현의 어려움을 하나의 요인으로 결합시키고 외부 지향적 사고는 따로 분리하는 2요인 구조가 지속적으로 확인되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 TAS-20의 세 하위 요인 간 상관 및 세 하위 요인과 준거 변인(우울)과의 상관에 대한 메타 분석을 실시하고 외부 지향적 사고 요인이 다른 요인과 이질적인 속성을 지니고 있음을 시사하는 결과를 바탕으로 TAS-20 척도의 총점에서 EOT 하위 척도 점수를 분리할 필요성을 논의하였다.
