The ruling classes of Goryeo believed that reading and writing life were men"s roles. Therefore, the reading and writing life of women in charge of housekeeping did not receive much attention.
But the women of the ruling classes learned characters, wrote or read public and private documents, and wrote poetry. They read Confucian scriptures and history, read women"s norms, and read and recite Buddhist scriptures. The women who read were women from the royal family, the noble families, the bureaucratic families, the rural petty official families, and the local ruling class. It was not women from the upper classes within the ruling class who read, but various groups.
The reading list had no particular restrictions. The ruling class women freely read Confucian scriptures and history, women"s norms, and ritual books. In particular, unlike the Joseon Dynasty, they read Buddhist scriptures freely. It was also different from the Joseon Dynasty in that women did not hide their ability to write poetry.
Even if women read and wrote, they were not central to women"s activities. Reading and learning were related to men"s advancement. Thus, reading and writing life were secondary to women who were not allowed to enter government offices. Women had their own territories in charge of household chores.
The writing life and reading of ruling class women began with the education of their parents when they were young, and was used to educate their children after marriage. This was different from the way men were educated at National Academy, private schools, and local public school. Women"s writing life and reading were basically done in relation to household or private life, not public life.
During the Goryeo period, men were in charge of reading and success, and women were in charge of housekeeping. But it would be a prejudice to think that women were far from writing life or reading. In this regard, it is necessary to newly understand the historical aspects of women in the ruling class of Goryeo.
