The defense of the capital, where government agencies such as the king of the Joseon Dynasty are concentrated, was an important issue that determined the existence of the nation itself. In this regard, the defense of the Gyeonggi region surrounding the capital was a major factor directly linked to the defense of the capital. In particular, the northwestern part of Gyeonggi Province, centered on the Imjin River, was more important because it was a place where Uiju-ro, the most important main road, passed.
In the 18th century, defense facilities were established at various points in northwestern Gyeonggi Province and the military system was reorganized to increase the effectiveness of the capital defense. Against this backdrop, defense facilities and military organizations such as Imjinjin(臨津鎭) and Jangsanjin(長山鎭) were established in the south of the Imjin River in the mid to late Yeongjo Period, and Gyeonggi Ubang Eoyeong(京畿右防禦營), which was located in Jangdan(長湍), was moved to Paju(坡州). This was the conclusion of the reorganization of the defense system in northwestern Gyeonggi Province in the 18th century.
