This study examined the characteristics of the motivations to learn in adult learners who were studying in Japan?related courses at higher education institutions in Korea. To clarify the motivations behind why adult learners chose a Japan?related course, we analyzed open?ended responses of 195 adult learners using KH Coder. The result was 375 sentences and a total of 6,401 words extracted, with 843 words different. Among them, 89 words appeared more than 5 times. To clarify the relationship between the vocabulary, we created a co? occurrence network and analyzed these 89 words with a Jaccard coefficient of 0.1 or higher. We also conducted a correspondence analysis of the 89 words that appeared more than 5 times to see if the trend of learning motivations differed according to the learners’ age. The analysis showed the following characteristics behind the motivations to learn in adult learners who were studying in higher education institutions. (1) They were interested and concerned for Japan through past experiences and contacts with Japan (2) They were unsatisfied with their past studies or current states of learning and were looking for relearning and deepening understanding (3) They expected that learning about Japan would be useful for their hobbies, entertainment, lifestyle, and their own life (4) They felt it a social necessity to learn Japanase to choose a profession or acquire a specialty (5) They were interested and concerned for Japan due to the geographical factor of being close to Japan (6) Their view and inquiring mind about Japan led to their learning. The trend of learning motivations also differed according to the learners’ age. For those in their 20s and 30s, their motivation to learn was mainly their interest and concern stemming from contact with Japanese dramas and comics, while those in their 40s and over were mostly motivated by travel and intellectual curiosity.
