This study intends to contemplate the feature of the concept of being a hybrid represented in After ALife Ahead by Pierre Huyghe through the concept of “nonmodern” by the French philosopher, Bruno Latour. As Huyghe’s signature work, After ALife Ahead was a hybrid ecosystem where the boundaries between humans and nonhumans, nature and society, and reality and the digital disappeared, and has been a process of the coevolution of various existences. Latour proposes taking ontology as a starting point and altering our interpretation of understanding the world from the epistemology of separation to that of relationships. The laboratory, from the perspective of Latour, is a place where a hybrid is generated via science and technology instead of an ontological separation between society and nature. From this viewpoint, After ALife Ahead can be interpreted as a place where a hybrid occurs and also originates in the same manner as Latour’s laboratory and be interpreted using the four features of it: first, a hybrid is produced by technoscience; second, it is impossible to make a prediction for the laboratory due to a translation rendered by the dynamic activity function of nonhumans; third, the laboratory on its own is a place of hybrid and an origin; and fourth, due to its operation based on social support, it is far from an “autonomy.” In conclusion, Huyghe also states that we, who lead a life as modern people, should seriously consider coexistence and change our attitude to life as non-modern people.

본 연구는 피에르 위그의 〈After ALife Ahead〉에 나타난 혼종적 특징을 브뤼노 라투르의 ‘비근대’ 개념을 통해 고찰한다. 피에르 위그는 시간을 기반으로 한 ‘상황’을 통해 관계 중심의 예술 활동을 이어왔다. 최근엔 그 관계의 영역을 생태계로 확장하여 인간을 중심으로 세계를 이해하는 사고방식에 문제를 제기해오고 있다. 〈After ALife Ahead〉는 위그의 대표적인 작업으로, 인간과 비인간, 자연과 사회, 현실과 디지털의 경계가 사라진 혼종의 생태계였으며, 다양한 존재들이 함께 공진화하는 과정의 작업이다. 라투르는 근대란 인간이 ‘선택적 인지경향’으로 기획한 인식론적 세계이며, 실상 인간과 비인간은 존재론적으로 결코 분리된 적이 없기 때문에 근대는 존재한 적이 없다고 주장한다. 따라서 그는 존재론을 출발점으로 삼으며 세계를 분리해서 이해하는 인식론을 관계적으로 전환하고자 한다. 나아가 라투르는 ‘생태화’를 인간과 비인간의 집합적 삶을 조직하기 위한 새로운 모델을 찾는 운동으로 정의하면서 인간과 비인간의 네트워크, 자연과 사회가 결합한 혼종의 형태를 세계의 본모습이라고 본다. 라투르의 이러한 생각은 그가 1970년대에 인류학자로서 실시한 ‘실험실’ 관찰에서 비롯되었다. 라투르가 본 실험실은 사회와 자연이 존재론적 분리가 이루어지지 않고 오히려 과학기술을 통해 혼종을 생산하는 장소였다. 이러한 관점에서 〈After ALife Ahead〉는 라투르가 관찰한 실험실과 같이 혼종의 장소이자 혼종의 생산지로 해석할 수 있으며, 실험실이 지닌 네 가지 특징으로 살펴볼 수 있다. 첫째, 테크노사이언스를 통해 혼종을 생산한다. 둘째, 비인간의 능동적 행위능력을 통해 번역이 수행되어 예측 불가능하다. 셋째, 실험실 자체가 혼종의 장소이자 혼종의 생산지다. 넷째, 사회의 후원을 통해 운영되기 때문에 ‘자율성’과 거리가 멀다는 점을 들 수 있다. 또한 〈After ALife Ahead〉는 나선 형태로 과거와 현재가 연결되어 있다고 보는 라투르의 시간관을 반영하면서 공존의 시간을 나타낸다. 결론적으로 위그는 〈After ALife Ahead〉를 통해 근대적 사고방식을 지닌 현대인이 인류세를 대하는 소극적인 태도를 지적하면서 비근대적 사유를 통해 공존에 대해 생각하고 삶의 태도를 변화해야 한다고 말하고 있다.
