The purpose of this study was to develop appropriate spelling writing instruction based on phonological awareness activities that teachers can use in parallel with textbooks to teach 3rd graders in elementary school. Eighteen 3rd grade students (9 males and 9 females) participated in the activities and 6 students were selected to investigate the characteristics of the development in their spelling writing skills. The results of the study showed that the instruction had positive effects on the development of students’ spelling writing skills. The study also showed that the instruction increased the confidence and interest of 6 students in English spelling writing. In addition, the students had a very high preference for word making activities using alphabet chips. These results drew the following conclusions. First, phonological awareness based spelling writing activities in the early reading stages should be conducted continuously in order for the students to better decipher, accurately read, and write new words. Secondly, the national curriculum based textbooks should present phonological awareness instructional materials. Finally, it is suggested that teacher training programs should be provided to support effective spelling writing instruction for the elementary English class.
