This paper investigates libertinism in Aphra Behn’s play, The Rover and how it reflects political conflicts and shifting gender relations during the Restoration period. Libertinism, actively led by Charles II’s libertine circle, was politically used to strengthen royal authority against the Whig party through the use of political censorship or dramatic satire with the growing popularity of Restoration theatre. Libertine comedies, which often deal with marital crises, also challenge conventional gender norms and ideologies through libertine characters. The Rover reflects political turmoil through wandering cavaliers and changing conventional gender norms with unconventional women, including a female libertine. Some critics criticize that these subversive aspects of The Rover seem to be offset by its conservative ending illustrated by marriage, but marital crises in the play disclose intense conflicts between families, men and women, and classes. Libertine characters nevertheless undermine the existing social, political, and gender ideologies by questioning their validity.
