In modern society, it is considered difficult to maintain a certain sense of self-identity, and the non-separability of individual and social structure makes the crisis of self-identity mean the crisis of modern society and the crisis of architecture. From this point of view, analyzing the changes in the original form of avant-garde art in the 20th century, which opposed the modernity of univocality and aimed at subverting the system, can be a reference to understand the essence of the constant crisis in the architecture. The main purpose of this paper is to theoretically study the avant-garde art and analyze the relationship between avant-garde and contemporary architecture, to reveal subversive experiments in contemporary architecture are the product of avant-garde which are out of the conflict of modernity. Therefore, it is not to interpret individual architectural works, but to reveal the meaning of present avant-garde' and subversion' in architecture. In chapter 2, the trend of the late 20th century’s avant-garde movement which tried not to distinguish life from art is considered. In chapter 3, the relationship between the strategies revealed in the theoretical considerations of art avant-garde and architectural experiments in modern and contemporary architecture is analyzed. in Chapter 4, with regard to the tendency of architecture to focus on individual senses in consumer society, cases of subversive strategies in contemporary architecture are analyzed. As a result, 1)intoxication of Abstract expressionism and primitive sublime of Informel are become anti-form architectural strategies, 2)the happening and frugality of fluxus and arte povera are become anti-material architectural strategies, 3)the taboos and violations of erotism appear as architectural strategies of desire. In conclusion, the subversive strategy in contemporary architecture is different from the subversion to the convention. The significance of this study is to present the point of understanding contemporary architecture which is difficult to structure in a single form defined as '-ism' as in the 20th century. Thus, architectural criticism of the situation that replaces functionalism and pluralism becomes possible in contemporary architecture biased toward visibility.
