‘AG’(Korea Avant-garde Group) is an aggressive artistic group who worked from 1969 to 1975. They were a peak of art movement in the late 1960s and sign of art practice in the 1970s. Artists and critics participated in AG for the first time in Korea, so it was an organizational art movement combined by magazine publishment and exhibition for the joint goal.
The characteristics of AG works can be abstracted as follows. First, they reflected attributes of developing city and modern civilization and created geometric abstraction, pop-art image and architectural image, etc. Second, they concentrated on the exploration of objective realities" structure and origin, introduced objects to works directly, eliminated the division of art genres and formed conceptual art. Third, they pursued Korean identity by various languages of art forms through the daring acception of foreign styles.
AG symbolized "Avant-garde", but didn"t resist politically and socially. They accepted modern civilization rather than criticized it, and pursued reformation of the art, not subversion of the art. So, they are far from radical Avant-garde. However, they realized realities of Korean art, artists and critics participated in organizational movement equally, they continuously conducted experiments for crises of modern art and their identity was found in international artistic trend of the same period for statement of independent aesthetic sense. Therefore, they showed aspects of Avant-garde.
At the turning point from the 1960s to the 1970s, AG showed double-sided trial of modernism and post-modernism. Double-sidedness of AG showed double aspects of contradictory realities of not only art but also the period and double aspects of intellectuals and artists, who lived in the period. AG reflects contradictory desires of the period, such as freedom and richness, resistance and stableness, construction and deconstruction, groupism and individualism, and the significances can be evaluated as it was revivified to essential phenomenon of life and realities and expended to various art forms.
