Neuroscience, which has made rapid progress in the 20th century, is closely linked to such disciplines as physiology, clinical medicine, molecular biology, psychology, etc. It studies the relationship between human consciousness, emotion, behavior and the brain. As the neuroscientifical studies of brain structure becomes more detailed, neuroscientists are developing a discussion of religious consciousness beyond the study of human behavior, and psychology. Neurotheology, especially in the academic field studying the correlation between human religious consciousness and the brain, uses neurologic research methods. This paper briefly analyzes the religious consciousness of human beings analyzed by Andrew Newburg. The main purpose is to analyze his view of religious consciousness through the hermeneutical point of view. When he analyzes religious consciousness, he uses neuroscientific research methods. Using brain imaging techniques in neuroscientific research methods, he studies the correlation between brain and religious consciousness, thereby possibly proving that religious consciousness is not a delusion but a reality. However, because these methods do not reveal the essence of religious consciousness, Newberg discusses what the essence of religious consciousness is through religious philosophical methods of theological study. However, this philosophical approach is superficial. This paper suggests that religious consciousness should not be interpreted only through the brain but in the connection of life. This study will firstly examine Newberg’s argument for interpreting religious consciousness by analyzing the brain, secondly analyze the contributions of his discussion and the limits of his interpretations, and then will lastly discuss from a religious philosophical standpoint why religious consciousness should be interpreted not in the brain, but in the connection of life.
