Stéphane Mallarmé’s signature poem 《 “L'après-midi d'un faune”》 led to the creation of a number of works of the same title after it inspired artists such as Debussy and Nijinsky. In particular, Mallarmé, Debussy, and Nijinsky have combined symbolic expressions based on metaphors and the use of implications as well as impressionistic paintings that all portray sensuous colors to create an original and progressive artwork. Thus, they left behind a remarkable and initiative achievement in the history of art. This study has analyzed the original expressive techniques used by each artist in their works titled 《 “L'après-midi d'un faune,”》 and the results of which are as follows: First, Mallarméa arranged his poem with poetic diction by taking not only the meaning but also the sound of a language into consideration, thus forming a rhythm to make the diction be read like the lyrics of a song. This technique has expanded the expression realm of a poem by allowing the readers to have an unlimited imagination by reading between the lines through symbolic implications and metaphors. Next, Debussy selected the flute to be the solo instrument and created an impressionistic piece of music by applying a symbolic technique via colorful implications to a casual rhythm and ambiguous melody. Lastly, Nijinsky opened the gateway to modern ballet with radical choreography by breaking away from classical ballet techniques such as the turn in, the use of the entire foot, bent arm movements, and the two-dimensional performance composition.
