John Updike’s so-called “Rabbit” series consists of five novels, Rabbit, Run(1961), Rabbit Redux(1971), Rabbit Is Rich(1981), Rabbit at Rest(1990) and “Rabbit Remembered”(2000). The main thematic concerns in the novels are largely related to such existential themes as rejection of systems, alienation, despair, nothingness, absurdity, awareness of death. Throughout his existential journey, Harry “Rabbit” Angstrom, the protagonist of the novels, rejects all the established values which negate his uniqueness and subjectivity and follows his inner imperatives in the present moment. What he finds at the end of his life is the importance of selfhood and historicity of his own life. He becomes Nietzschean Superman through the action of transcendence by finding out the importance of selfhood and historicity of his own life at the close of his life. Harry identifies his own existential way of life with Dalai Lama, Tibet’s religious and divine leader in the manner that his selfhood is the very essence of godhood. The existential themes in the series concern Buddhist philosophy on the basis of the Dalai Lama motif. This writing focuses on comparing the existential themes to some thoughts of Buddhism; transcendence to nirvana, for-itself to nagarjuna, and nihilism to void.
