This study aims to examine connectors in L2 students’ writings of four different genres and to compare with L1 students; writing and expert texts. The study analyzes the use of connectors in L2 students’ writing from 62 participants and compares the results with two corpora of native English students’ writing and published academic papers. This study, therefore, analyzes the use of connectors in Korean L2 students’ writings of four different genres; narrative, comparison, cause-effect, and argumentative essays. The results show that Korean L2 students generally tend to be affected by different genres when they write English essays. The quantitative analysis shows the strong evidence of genre-specific use of individual conjunction. Suggestions were made for using computer corpora in understanding L2 students’ language difficulties and helping them develop communicative and pragmatic competence. The findings also give some pedagogical implications for secondary education that teaching strategies and specific teaching materials including various text genres are necessary to raise L2 students’ genre-specific awareness in L2 writings.
