The purpose of this thesis explains critically the problems related to plural suffix ‘-들(deul)’ which appear in essay or report of college students. When reading the students’ writings, I see often plural suffix ‘-(들)deul’ like ‘귤들’ in “Mandarins(귤들) are getting ripe all at fruit farm of grandmother.” Expression as “귤들” can see frequently not only college students’ writings but also elementary・middle・high school textbook, literary works, journalism, newscasting. Plural suffix ‘-들(deul)’ is usually attached when the writer sees two or more objects. This means that ‘number category’ of Western grammar categories has come into our speaking and writing. Scholars who study Korean language find the reason why plural suffix ‘-들(dul)’ is used without any principle in the context of the Western language, including English. However, this diagnosis is simply too simplistic. This study is looking for the history of superfluity plural suffix ‘-들(deul)’ used without principle as in incomplete version of Korean grammar. First, I looked at how Korean grammar has organized plural form of noun. In particular, When Korean grammar define the use of the plural suffix ‘-들(deul)’, I could recognize that there was ‘number category’ of Western grammar on the basis. However, ‘number category’ of Western grammar is not just a matter of numbers(數・one or two?). It is germane to the view that Western people view the world and objects. In other words, it needs to be found in the ‘individuality’ of objects. It is a matter of identifying the difference between the Western and the East as well. The study of plural suffix ‘-들(deul)’ should begin to exact ‘number category’ of Western grammar and concept of number[數] in Korean language.
