This paper discussed general grammatical features and grammaticalization mechanism regarding postposition developed from conditional verb form in modern Japanese. Aside from verbs that express visual, verbal and mental activities, some other verbs are used as the object of postposition and the postposition appears when these verbs are used in the form of 「sureba」, 「suruto」, or 「shitemo」. These conditional forms are used when a narrator’s intention, determination or desire is not involved in the causality between protasis and apodosis like in the sentence: “When you look at a lemon, saliva flows.” When transitioning from main verb to postposition, they lose autonomy and are used in the fixed word form together with noun. In the process where a verb changes into postposition, mechanism such as metonymy, metaphor or reanalysis is confirmed. Moreover, implication within a conditional expression, which is a characteristic holding possibility of changes in conditions leading to that in results, is also maintained in the usage of postposition.
